Dr. Sage is a Materials Scientist specializing in failure analysis, particularly welding related failures. He has extensive experience with welding metallurgy, processes, and degradation, as well as cracking mechanisms, defect formation in metallic materials, and alloy design. He also investigates manufacturing and material processing for defects, especially in materials with non-equilibrium microstructures. Dr. Sage has experience conducting site inspections and performing laboratory analysis including metallography, materials testing, microscopy, and mechanical testing.

Dr. Sage holds an M.S. and Ph.D. in Welding Engineering from the Ohio State University, as well as two engineering BS degrees from the University of Florida. During his studies he developed and proposed a novel mechanism for liquid metal embrittlement of austenitic steels, a cracking phenomenon currently at issue during the processing of third generation advanced high strength steels. Dr. Sage is an active member of the American Welding Society.
