ARCCA Expert Joseph M. Teitelman wrote an article recently in PAMIC Pulse Magazine for their Spring 2021 issue. The article, Latest Technology in Accident Construction, explores the new data that is being made available to reconstructionists as a result of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).
In the 1990’s, motor vehicle manufacturers began equipping new models with event data recorders (commonly referred to as “black boxes”), which quickly provided accident reconstructionists access to important data relating to collision events. Over the years, there have been several key advancements in passenger vehicle data accessibility thanks in part to both federal legislation and to the ever-increasing computerization of the modern vehicle. When investigating a collision involving newer vehicles, an accident reconstructionist may have access to data from multiple sources including the vehicles’ event data recorders, infotainment and telematics systems, aftermarket dashcams, and more. A new and exciting trend in passenger vehicles is the increasing implementation of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). These systems rely on a variety of sensors and controllers throughout the vehicle and aim to automate and enhance the driving experience. Common ADAS features include autonomous emergency braking, lane keeping assistance, blind spot warning, and adaptive cruise control.
