Airport tugs are used for baggage handling at airports. In this particular case, the tug rolled over on the tarmac causing severe injury to the operator. ARCCA reconstructionists were asked to determine the tug’s rate of speed. A site inspection was required and a skid and momentum analysis was performed. This information was then used by engineers to determine whether the vehicle’s stability was at issue. The occupant protection and crashworthiness engineer evaluated the performance of the restraint system and developed an alternate design which would have prevented the injury.
