ARCCA was asked to investigate a roller coaster amusement ride fatality. One of the occupants was ejected from the ride, falling to his death. ARCCA evaluated the performance of the ride to determine the forces and mechanisms which caused the occupant to be ejected. ARCCA’s biomechanical & mechanical experts determined the proximate cause of the failure of the ride’s occupant retention system leading to the occupant’s ejection and death. ARCCA conducted a series of quasi-static tests to evaluate the kinematics and kinetics of a 50% male Hybrid III dummy within a mock-up of the interior of the cart.
