Some products are developed for certain market segments and are unsuitable for others. This scenario exists as it relates to child safety issues. ARCCA’s child safety expert was asked to look at a case where a child was sitting on a booster seat and restrained by a three-point belt, but was severely injured in a crash. As part of his analysis, the expert determined that a five-point seat belt was available. He evaluated the child’s kinematics in that crash with a five-point and determined it would have resulted in no injury. It was also determined that the manufacturer had a responsibility to warn and provide appropriate instruction to the public for the safe use of the product.
