Bicycle Accident Reconstruction – ARCCA Sponsors Innovative Project
ARCCA recently sponsored a Penn State University Engineering School Capstone Project that entailed designing and building a device to measure a bicyclist’s perception-reaction time (PRT). A team of six students from the Computer and Electrical Engineering Departments participated in the project, and their final design has been uploaded to the Learning Factory Showcase.
The device created by the team measured the time from when a visual stimulus was presented to the bicyclist to the time of brake initiation and, it delineated the movement time from when the bicyclist’s hand was lifted off the handlebars to when he/she reached for the brake lever. The device also recorded the bicyclist’s heart rate and power to quantify the physiological exertion. The device was designed for use in a laboratory setting and on the road under real-world conditions.
